How to Increase the Number of Blog Comments

Posted by Ian on 16 February 2010 12 Comments

Do you have a blog but you don’t get any comments on your posts? A blog without comments looks empty. It simply gives the impression that nothing interesting is happening there.

What can you do to increase the number of comments on your blog?

Ask your visitors questions
A good way to encourage your visitors to post comments is to ask for their opinion at the end of your post. When they are asked, people are more willing to give their opinion or share their experience.

Don’t ask your visitors to register before posting comments
Many bloggers require their visitors to be registered and logged in to be able to post comments. This option is useful if you want to avoid spam, but it will also decrease significantly the number of comments on your blog.

Get involved in the conversation
Interact with the persons who leave comments on your blog. Make sure you always answer their questions. If you have a big blog this will be a hard task for you, but it will encourage more visitors to join in the conversation.

Use Top Commentators plugin
If you use Wordpress, install the Top Commentators plugin. After you install it, it will display the top commentators on your blog. This will encourage your visitors to keep commenting.

Remove NoFollow attribute from comments
You can use a DoFollow plugin to remove the nofollow attribute. Other bloggers or website owners will be tempted to comment on your blog in order to increase their site’s link popularity.

Hope you enjoyed this article and that you’ll manage to significantly increase the number of comments on your blog.

I think the hardest thing is to receive the first comment. People usually don’t like starting a discussion.

The lack of comments is quite a problem for many bloggers. Especially when the blog is new and it doesn’t have any registered users.
Useful ideas!

Thanks for the advice! For me it’s quite hard to ask my visitors questions, as I have a download site. I might ask for their opinion on the videos :)

Hey there, I just can’t comprehend the right way to add your internet site in my rss reader. Are you able to assist me to, please

Ian Ian says:

If you want to add a site to your reader, first of all you need a valid email address. Next, you have to click on the RSS icon on the blog/website. Then you have to choose your reader (Google Reader, My Yahoo etc) and then click on Add to Reader. You will have to enter a valid e-mail address and confirm it.

If you use Mozilla Firefox you can use its built-in reader. You just have to go to Bookmarks and click on Subscribe to This Page.

If you would like to receive the news directly on your e-mail, just click on Subscribe Via E-Mail and enter a valid e-mail address. Don’t forget to confirm it.
